Water Detox: 4 DIY Body Cleansing Recipes

I decided to embark on a 5-day water detox for the heck of it. Plus, I’ve never done a detox before and I figured this would be an easy start.

Water Detoxes to Cleanse Your Body + Clear Your Mind

We always hear how important it is to drink water for our wellness. It helps improve our skin, hair, eyes, finger nails, brains, muscles—basically every part of our bodies. Water is vital whether you live an active lifestyle or not since more than half of our bodies are made up of water. Throw fruit into the mix and you’ve got yourself a pretty-benefit-packed drink.

Water Detox Benefits

What’s great about fruit-infused water detoxes are the additional health benefits, including:

  • Energy boost
  • Metabolism boost
  • Filled with vitamins
  • Removes toxins
  • Nourishes muscles
  • Hydrates your system
  • Lowers health risks

To be budget-friendly, I stuck to a few fruit combos, mixing and matching the ingredients each time. My favorite part about the detox is how clear-headed I felt. Another thing I noticed is how they curbed my appetite. I wasn’t as hungry came dinner time, which allowed me to eat lightly. My stomach was less bloated, and I even felt lighter and more energized after a few days. Try it out and see how it works for you!

With water detoxes, you can refill your bottle or cup more than once. Since I used a fruit-infused bottle, I stuck to 3 refills and simply added water once it ran out. You could also use a pitcher of water, soaking the ingredients, which allows for consistent flavoring and nutrients in each refill.

Remember, the longer the fruit sits in water, the more potent the ingredients.

Okay, here are 4 water detoxes I tried over the past week:

Cool Citrus

  • 1/2 orange
  • 2-3 inches of sliced cucumber
  • 1 inch ginger root

A great starter, the cucumber, orange and ginger detox is subtle in flavor with a citrus kick. Cucumbers are filled with antioxidants and help protect the brain. Oranges are packed with Vitamin C and are natural stomach fat burners. Ginger helps with nausea and has many other health benefits.

Apple + Orange + Cinnamon

  • 1/2 red apple
  • 1/2 orange
  • 1 cinnamon stick (or a sprinkle of ground cinnamon)

Apples have antioxidants that help reduce the risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Cinnamon is also great for digestion. I would say the apple-cinnamon combo was my least favorite of the bunch because I used ground cinnamon which doesn’t breakdown in water. If you try this one, I highly recommend using a cinnamon stick.  Nonetheless, this water detox is tasty for apple-cinnamon lovers.

Cool + Fresh

  • 1/2 green apple
  • 2 inch sliced cucumber
  • 1 inch ginger root

I liked this combo so much I did it twice! The cooling sensation of cucumber topped with the fresh taste of green apple is a hit within itself. Toss in a bit of ginger and you’ve got a water-winner.

Hot Ginger Citrus Tea

  • 2-inch ginger root
  • 3 slices of orange
  • 2 cups boiling water

I have to say, this one was my favorite hands down. The combination of citrus and ginger was very potent, boiling both in hot water made the flavors seep out even more.

Whether you’re looking for a refreshing yet soothing morning tea or an afternoon mid-day boost, the ginger-citrus mix is perfect.
